About Andy Baird
Andy Baird has built a remarkable four-decade-long career as an artist and art educator, contributing significantly to the secondary and graduate levels. Holding a B.A. and an M.A. in Fine Arts from the University of Northern Colorado, Baird's artworks, spanning paintings and ceramics, have garnered attention in galleries and exhibitions across the United States and beyond. Currently based in Charlotte, NC, he continues to shape the artistic landscape.
In a unique fusion of portraiture and abstract expressionism, two seemingly disparate worlds collide in Baird's innovative art practice, creating what he terms the "action-painted portrait." This unique blend breaks away from traditional norms, where portraiture strives for natural likenesses and abstract expressionism avoids nature-inspired subjects. The paintings are in a perpetual state of falling apart and weaving themselves back together again before the viewer.
Liberated from the constraints of predictable color usage, he employs bold combinations. Within the canvas, Baird's large and vibrant portraits emerge from a seemingly chaotic dance of light and dark values, captivating viewers with dynamic interplays of form and spontaneity.
